I received this book for Christmas and after reading it I can say it was a perfect gift. I love music and I like even more to read about musicians. They live such an interesting life are hearing them tell it is the best behind the music view you can get.

Dave’s story is no exception. I had a narrow view of Dave Grohl the musician and no view of the kind of person he is. He is a very humble guy that states quite often “how did I get here” when finding himself sitting in for Iggy Pop at the beggining of his career or playing the Whitehouse for the Obama’s. There is a certain vulnerability about him that he shows throughout the book that gives you a deeper inside to who he is. It comes out a lot when he talks about his family - especially his girls. If you ever wondered can a rockstar still be a rockstar but also be a good Dad, Dave answers this with so many great little stories.

Did you know Dave Grohl was in a band called Scream? I didn’t. This was the gig that launched him into the music business and showed him the world and what it takes at the age of 17-18. The story of him touring with Scream was worth the price of admission because it showed the hardship of becoming a musician, but more importantly it showed how passion for something can overcome living on corn dogs.

I like the fact the book didn’t focus on just one story - he could have easily wrote the entire book on Nirvana, the three years he spent from the band forming to Kurt’s death. But he didn’t, he told his complete story and it is an extremely interesting story. I was just as amazed as he was at all the opportunities that came his way - one of my favorites is inducting Rush into the Rock Music Hall of Fame - but when I was all done with this book it made complete sense to me.

This book is a high recommendation from me. Good reading.
